Kalaikunda: Fighter jets of the air forces of India and the United States took part in a joint exercise at Kalaikunda Air Force Station in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district, an official said on Monday.

As part of the Cope India 2023 exercise, five top-notch fighter jets of the two air forces took off in quick succession from the air force base.

The Indian Air Force has employed Tejas, Rafale, Jaguar and Su-30 MKI fighter jets while F-15 is representing the United States Air Force in the exercise.

The exercise, which began on April 10, will conclude on Monday.

A simultaneous 12-day exercise of transport aircraft was held at Panagarh Air Force Station in Paschim Bardhaman district from April 10.

Rajeev Bindal Appointed President Of BJP’s Himachal Pradesh Unit

In other appointments, the party has made Siddharthan and Pawan Rana Mahamantri their organisational general secretary in Himachal Pradesh and Delhi state units respectively.

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed, five-time MLA Rajeev Bindal as president of the Himachal Pradesh unit of the party.

“BJP National President Hon’ble Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda has appointed Dr Rajeev Bindal as State President of Himachal Pradesh. This appointment comes into immediate effect,” Arun Singh, National General Secretary, BJP, said in a letter on Sunday.

This comes after Himachal Pradesh BJP chief Suresh Kashyap resigned from the post citing personal reasons.

Rajeev Bindal, who hails from Solan headed the BJP state unit earlier as well.

In other appointments, the party has made Siddharthan and Pawan Rana Mahamantri their organisational general secretary in Himachal Pradesh and Delhi state units respectively.

The BJP had suffered defeat in Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections last year in which Congress returned to power winning 40 seats.

Senior Congress leader Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu took oath as the 15th Chief Minister of the hill state last year following the party’s win.

A loyalist of the Gandhi family, Sukhinder Sukhu (58) is a four-time MLA and former chief of Congress in the state.

Imran Khan’s Big Charge Against Pak’s Former Army Chief

The deposed premier, who was voted out of office in April last year after a no-confidence motion, said the Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief told him that Bajwa wanted to bring Shehbaz Sharif into power.

Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan said he dissolved the provincial assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) after the former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa advised him to do so, The News.com reported.

During a meeting with General Bajwa where President Arif Alvi was also present, the former army chief suggested that if the PTI chief sought elections, he should first dissolve his governments in the two provinces, Khan said in a recent interview with a private news channel on Sunday, The News.com reported.

The deposed premier, who was voted out of office in April last year after a no-confidence motion, said the Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief told him that Bajwa wanted to bring Shehbaz Sharif into power.

“General Bajwa and the [premier intelligence] agency knew that the current rulers had stolen the money from the national kitty and taken it abroad. Despite knowing this, General Bajwa was willing to give them ‘NRO’ as he had planned an extension [for himself],” Khan said.

During the interview, Imran Khan added that the polls can take place in July if Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif dissolves the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament.

“Elections can be held in July if the prime minister dissolves the assembly,” the ousted premier said.

He also stressed that caretaker governments in both Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the provinces where Khan’s party was in power before he decided to dissolve its two assemblies on January 14 and 18, respectively, are illegal after the lapse of their stipulated term, The News.com reported.

He demanded that the caretaker government be abolished and a new “neutral” interim setup be instated.

He added that the Supreme Court of Pakistan has given May 14 as the date for Punjab polls and his party won’t let the government go beyond that.

“If they think they [incumbent government] will pressurise the Supreme Court, we will not let it happen. They will scandalise the top court to run away from elections,” he said.

In response to the PTI’s call for elections in the two provinces, the government has, time and again, insisted on conducting elections, to the national and provincial assemblies, together in October, The News.com reported.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court had fixed May 14 as the new date for the election to the Punjab Assembly, quashing the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to extend the polls date from April 10 to Oct 8.

While security has been cited as a major concern for the government to refuse to hold the polls, the lack of funds for carrying out the task has also been communicated as the main reason for their insistence on delay.

The PTI chief shared the suggestion while refusing to back down from his demand for the snap polls. “There may be no money even in October. The situation may worsen. We cannot go beyond May 14.”

The former prime minister further said that inflation irked the public, and the government is running away from its reaction by postponing the elections.

“They are scared of elections,” he said censuring the Shehbaz-led administration.

Khan insisted that the ECP is working in connivance with the ruling Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), an alliance of 13 political parties.

“Maryam Nawaz is receiving protocol. The election commission is with them,” he said, directing his criticism towards the electoral body and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior vice-president.

Commenting on talks with the ruling alliance in Islamabad, Khan said he had given the mandate of negotiations to his party’s Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi and not to Asad Qaisar, the former speaker of the National Assembly, The News.com reported.

“There has been no discussion on negotiations with Shah Mahmood Qureshi so far,” he said amid reports that some major political parties had reached out to the PTI.

Earlier this week, the CJP Bandial said the top court could make some room and change the date of elections if all the political parties evolve a consensus to hold talks. The court had earlier also stressed on political parties to sit together to resolve the issues.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, meanwhile, expressed his support for the proposal, calling on his allies and all other political parties to come together and try to end the ongoing crises, The News.com reported.

PPP senior leader Qamar Zaman Kaira also confirmed that the ruling alliance made a contact with the PTI. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Siraj Ul Haq has also been actively trying to build a bridge between the PTI and the coalition parties in the government.

Khan, however, claimed that the government would use negotiations to further delay the polls.

World’s Richest Man Bernard Arnault Auditions His Five Children Over Lunches To Run Luxury Empire: Report

Mr Arnault effectively auditions them to see who will take over the luxury empire.

Bernard Arnault, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton (LVMH) and the world’s richest man reportedly meets his five children once a month for lunch inside a private dining room at the headquarters of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE. According to a report by Wall Street Journal, the lunch lasts for 90 minutes and begins with the French billionaire reading off his iPad the discussion topics. Mr Arnault discusses strategy at his luxury business empire.

According to WSJ, Mr Arnault then goes around the table asking his five adult children for advice. The 74-year-old billionaire seeks an opinion on specific managers at the company, the people said, or whether it’s time for a shake-up at one of LVMH’s myriad brands.

Mr Arnault effectively auditions them to see who will take over the luxury empire. However, the billionaire has given no indication of whom he will choose as his successor, saying only that it will be based on merit.

WSJ report said that these monthly sessions are part of the decades-long plan to prepare his children who will take over the company when he is no longer there.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Mr Arnaut pulled ahead of Tesla CEO Elon Musk late last year as the wealthiest person on the planet. His wealth was $208 billion on April 19, according to the index.

Mr Arnault owns about half of the massive luxury brand company. In 1989, he acquired a controlling stake in LVMH. The company’s portfolio of brands includes Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, Tiffany, Sephora, TAG Heuer and Dom Perignon champagne.

The world’s richest man has also appointed his children to important positions within the company. Delphine, the eldest of his children, was named the head of the second-largest brand in the empire Christian Dior. The position of managing the holding firm that oversees LVMH and Mr Arnault’s family fortune was given to her brother Antoine, as per the outlet. Frederic Arnault is the CEO of TAG Heuer, Alexandre Arnault is an executive at Tiffany and Jean Arnault, who is the youngest of the Arnault siblings, is in charge of marketing and product development for Louis Vuitton’s watch department.

“All Parties Welcome”: Wrestlers On #MeToo Protest In Delhi Change Tack

“This time, all parties are welcome to join our protest whether it is BJP, Congress, AAP, or any other party,” Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia said.

New Delhi: India’s top wrestlers have resumed their protest in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexually harassing several athletes. The wrestlers who called off their protest earlier this year after assurances that a committee would probe the allegations say that they will remain at the protest site till police file a complaint against Brij Bhushan.

“We will not believe anyone blindly. Last time we were misled. We hope this time there is no politics in this case,” says Vinesh Phogat, the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold at both the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

The protesters also said that this time they will not turn down anyone, and whoever wants to support their protest could come and join them. In January, the protesters had request left leader Vrinda Karat to leave the stage as it was an “athletes protest”.

“This time, all parties are welcome to join our protest whether it is BJP, Congress, AAP, or any other party. We are not affiliated with any party,” Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia said.

Seven women wrestlers have filed a sexual harassment complaint against federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at the Connaught Place police station in Central Delhi. The protesting athletes claim that no action has been taken yet and they will continue their agitation till the police register an FIR in the case.

The wrestlers claim that they had ended their protest in January over “false assurances.”

“We will sit here day and night. Till the time we don’t get justice. We will sit here,” Ms Phogat said, after spending the night on the footpath.

“We have been trying to contact them (Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and other relevant authorities) for three months. The members of the committee are not responding to us, sports ministry has also not said anything, they don’t even pick up our calls. We have won medals for the country and have put our careers at stake for this,” she added.

In January, the sports ministry formed a five-member committee, which was headed by Olympic medallist boxer MC Mary Kom, to investigate the complaints. The committee had been instructed to submit its findings within a month.

Wrestler Sakshee Malikkh expressed frustration over the report on the issue by the panel not being made public yet.

“We want the report, which has recorded women wrestlers’ statements, to be public. It’s a sensitive issue, one of the complainants is a minor girl,” she said, adding that the names of the complainants must not be leaked.

The government panel submitted its report in the first week of April, but the ministry is yet to make its findings public. However, sources said the wrestlers could not prove the sexual harassment allegations against the WFI boss after several hearings.

Several wrestlers had gone public with the accusations against federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on January 18. The elite wrestlers had said they weren’t satisfied after talks with the government and “won’t wrestle another day” till their demands are met. Alleging mismanagement in the functioning of the federation, they demanded a complete overhaul of the federation.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has said that he will not contest for the president’s post in the WFI election on May 7 but hinted that he might look for a new role within the federation. He has served three four-year terms as president in a row and according to the Sports Code after completing 12 years as WFI chief, he is ineligible to contest for the top post.

Khalistani preacher Amritpal Singh arrested, sent to Assam jail

The Punjab Police has already invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against the Khalistan sympathizer.

The Punjab police arrested Amritpal Singh in Moga’s Rode village early Sunday, ending an over a month-long manhunt against the radical preacher who styled himself after slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

The preacher was taken into custody at 6.45 am as he came out — in the traditional attire that included a sheathed sword — of the gurdwara in Rode, Bhindranwale’s native village and also the place where he himself took over last year as the chief of Waris Punjab De.

The 29-year-old was detained under the stringent National Security Act and flown to Assam on a special flight to be lodged at the Dibrugarh Central Jail, where nine other associates picked up over the past several weeks are kept.

Shortly after his arrest, a video surfaced online in which the extremist preacher is seen delivering a brief address, indicating that he is surrendering.

Another clip showed him sitting before a portrait of Bhindranwale, who died in a controversial Army operation in 1984 to flush out militants holed up inside Amritsar’s Golden Temple.

Inspector General of Police Sukhchain Singh Gill countered the preacher’s claim that it was a “surrender”, and said the fugitive was cornered.

“A joint operation was conducted by Amritsar police and the intelligence wing of Punjab Police. He was located in village Rode based on operational inputs with Punjab Police. He was surrounded from all sides. The village was surrounded by the Punjab Police,” he said.

He said police did not enter the gurdwara. “It was very important to maintain the sanctity of the gurdwara and police in uniform could not enter inside.” A message was conveyed to the preacher that he had no chance of making his escape, Gill said.

“National Security Act warrants were issued against Amritpal Singh and these have been executed today morning. Further, law will take its own course,” he said.

In a video message hours after the arrest, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said those who disturb peace and harmony in the state will face the law, and innocent people will not be disturbed.

Mann said he continuously monitored developments during the night, leading to the arrest.

Former Akal Takht jathedar Jasbir Singh Rode said he met Amritpal Singh at the gurdwara as the preacher prepared to surrender.

In the gurdwara clip, the fugitive recalled that Rode is Bhindranwale’s birth place, and the village where his own “dastar bandi” (turban-tying ceremony) took place – a reference to his taking over Waris Punjab De chief.

He claimed there were excesses by the government against Sikhs while he was on the run, appearing to suggest that the security agencies wanted to harass people rather than just arrest him. He said he would have cooperated with them had arrest been their objective.

“I have decided to surrender and this arrest is not an end, it is the beginning,” he said.

In the “court of the Almighty”, he said he is not guilty.

Police had launched a crackdown against Amritpal Singh on March 18, about three weeks after he and his supporters, many of them brandishing weapons, stormed into the Ajnala police station near Amritsar to secure the release of an arrested colleague.

There were concerns that the preacher had links with Pakistan spy agency ISI and was working towards radicalising the Sikh youth, in an effort to revive the call for a separate nation of ‘Khalistan’.

Amritpal Singh returned from Dubai last year and took over Waris Punjab De after the death of activist-singer Deep Sandhu.

Among the declared aims of the outfit was fighting drug addiction among young people, but intelligence agencies feared that this was just a front.

Several cases have been lodged against him and his associates for allegedly spreading disharmony, attempt to murder, attack on police personnel and obstructing the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.

While the preacher remained on the run for 36 days, authorities continued to pile pressure on him by arresting his key associates.

His wife Kirandeep Kaur, a UK-based woman he married in February, was stopped from boarding a flight to London from Amritsar airport recently.

Scores of sympathises were detained by police, but most of them were released as the Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee claimed young people were being harassed.

Nine of the preacher’s alleged associates are in the Dibrugarh jail. They are Daljit Singh Kalsi, Papalpreet Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Varinder Singh Johal, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Harjit Singh, Bhagwant Singh, Basant Singh and Gurinderpal Singh Aujla.

The plane carrying Amritpal Singh landed in Dibrugarh on Sunday afternoon.

US “To Issue More Than A Million Visas” To Indians In 2023: Top Official

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu also told Press Trust of India in an interview this week that they are also prioritising work visas: H-1B’s and L visas, the most sought-after by IT professionals from India.

Washington: The US is on track to issue more than a million visas to Indians this year, a top official has said, assuring that the Biden administration is committed this summer to make sure it processes all of the student visas for Indians whose school starts this fall.

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu also told Press Trust of India in an interview this week that they are also prioritising work visas: H-1B’s and L visas, the most sought-after by IT professionals from India.

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise.

Technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China.

“We are on track to issue more than a million visas this year. This is a record for us along with a record number of student visas and immigrant visas,” Mr Lu said.

Mr Lu said the US is committed this summer to make sure it processes all of the student visas for Indians whose school starts this fall.

There have been growing concerns in India over the long waiting period for first-time visa applicants, especially for those applying under B1 (business) and B2 (tourist) categories.

India is now number two in the world in terms of international students coming to the United States.

“We’ve also been prioritising work visas: H-1B’s and L visas. Wait times at some of our consular sections in India, for these visas are now below 60 days. We will continue to make sure that we prioritise visas for workers, as this is vital for both the American and the Indian economy,” Mr Lu said.

“For certain petition-based nonimmigrant work of visa categories, we plan to restart domestic visa renewal for applicants who meet certain requirements, including being physically present in the United States. We plan to have a pilot up and running later this year. This would eliminate the need for these applicants to travel abroad to renew their visas,” he said.

Responding to a question on those Indian IT professionals who are on H-1B visas and have lost their jobs, Lu noted that the Department of Homeland Security recently put out some new information specifically on the point of what these workers ought to do who want to readjust their status.

India-US relationship enjoys bipartisan support in the US, he said.

“I think part of the answer you can find in a really strong diaspora community in the US. For 30 years or more, our relationship is in part driven by Indian Americans who have lived here for decades, but still keep a very strong tie with India,” he said.

Over a million people fly back and forth between the two countries.

“That’s an amazing number given that we’re not close at all. It’s very expensive to fly back and forth. But those ties of people who moved here or maybe their parents come from India, those ties remain. They haven’t been cut by immigration,” he said.

“In fact, we now know that over 100,000 Americans are living in India as well. This relationship is very much to weigh and benefits both of us. Yeah. So, I think that’s true for political parties as it is for families in the US. Growing up I had many Indian American friends. I think that’s just part of the fabric of the United States,” Mr Lu said.

Joe Biden To Visit India In September, 2023 Will Be Big Year: US On India Ties

India’s leadership in the G-20 further broadens its capacity to stand as a force for good in the world, the official said.

Washington: US President Joe Biden is looking forward to travelling to India in September, his administration’s point person for South and Central Asia has said, observing that 2023 is going to be a “big year” for the India-US relationship.

India’s leadership in the G-20 further broadens its capacity to stand as a force for good in the world, the official said.

“This is gonna be a big year. Of course, India is hosting the G-20. This year, the United States is hosting APEC. Japan is hosting the G7. We have lots of our QUAD members who are taking on leadership roles. And it provides opportunities for all of us to bring our countries closer together,” Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Donald Lu, told news agency PTI in an interview on Thursday.

“I know our President is looking forward to travelling to India in September. That will be his first trip to India as part of the G-20 Leaders Summit. We’re really excited about what’s to come in the next few months,” he said.

“We’re only a little over three months into this new year. And we’ve had a number of really exciting things that happened,” he said.

This includes the visit of Secretary of State Tony Blinken, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to India. The India-US Forum in Delhi was attended by several senior administration officials.

India as the president of the G-20 has been taking a lead in advancing a positive agenda for the G-20.

“In March Dr Jaishankar hosted his QUAD counterparts for a ministerial meeting and extraordinary public events at the Raisina Dialogue with all four foreign ministers together. It was the first such public discussion with QUAD foreign ministers and really drove home how our four countries are coming together to support the people of the Indo-Pacific,” he said.

“And then lastly, this month, the arrival of our new Ambassador Eric Garcetti. He has already received a really warm welcome from our Indian and American staff at the US Embassy. Once he presents his credentials, he is looking forward to meeting with the rest of India and I think India will find that he is young, he is enthusiastic, and he’s eager to bring our relations to new heights,” Mr Lu said.

“We are really thankful for the tremendous work India has done by hosting the G-20 Foreign Ministerial meeting last month, and we look forward to actively participating in the many future G-20 meetings coming up this year, including the New Delhi Leaders Summit in September,” he said.

At the foreign ministers’ meeting, India created an agenda that allowed them to discuss some of the world’s most pressing challenges and deliberate to find concrete solutions.

“We have seen how the G-20 brings together countries for collective action. This meeting in March was no exception. As India has already shown during the first few meetings of its presidency, the G-20 is a powerful forum where the world’s leading economies can come together to respond to global challenges: food security, health, energy insecurity, climate change and unsustainable debt,” he said.

“Eid Mubarak!”: PM Modi Greets Nation As India Celebrates Eid-ul-Fitr

Eid-ul-Fitr 2023: In a tweet, PM Modi said, “Greetings on Eid-ul-Fitr. May the spirit of harmony and compassion be furthered in our society. I also pray for everyone’s wonderful health and well-being. Eid Mubarak!”

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today greeted people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and prayed for the health and well-being of all citizens.

In a tweet, PM Modi said, “Greetings on Eid-ul-Fitr. May the spirit of harmony and compassion be furthered in our society. I also pray for everyone’s wonderful health and well-being. Eid Mubarak!”

Meanwhile, the beautiful glimpses of people offering namaz nationwide emit positivity. Visuals from Delhi were a sight to behold. People hugged each other after offering namaz at Delhi’s Jama Masjid on the occasion of Eid-Ul-Fitr.

Speaking to news agency ANI, a man who came to offer namaz said, “I extend my wishes to the entire country on the occasion of Eid. This is a very important occasion after 30 days of fasting. We are happy right now and special arrangements are made for the morning namaz. Delicious food items will be made in our houses today.”

“Eid-Ul-Fitr sends the message of peace, brotherhood, humanity and love. I wish all evils are removed from the country and happiness spreads everywhere. I wish the nation keeps moving forward and keeps prospering,” he added.

He stressed that the country comes first and that everyone is “Hindustani first (Indian first).

Another man, GR Siddique from Ghaziabad said, “Today is a very happy day. Namaz is being offered everywhere in India with love.”

Sending a message of brotherhood across communities, he said that Hindus and Muslims should spread the message of love and brotherhood across the world.

The month of Ramzan was filled with purity and compassion for all and now the festival of Eid-Ul-Fitr is being celebrated across the country.

Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The festival is of great significance due to the moon sighting which has been part of Islamic culture for a long time.

It is believed that Prophet Muhammad used to wait for news of sightings of the crescent moon as it narrated the beginning of a new month.

Ending the holy month of Ramzan and starting a new spiritual journey also marks the beginning of a new Islamic year.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the month-long Ramzan fasting and the beginning of Shawwal which is the tenth month per the Islamic calendar. Since the observance of the moon is essential for ending Ramzan month and celebrating Eid, it is celebrated in different parts on different days usually with a one-day difference.
